HISTORY / HISTORIQUE |
History:
There is more than 40 years, nobody would have think
that the best pilots and the fastest cars would spend one day
on this farm plot of land. Since its construction in 1961, pilots
such as Stirling Moss, Gilles Villeneuve, Bruce Mc Laren and Mario
Anndretti used their tires on the circuit of Mosport in Bowmanville.
The
circuit had series such as the Canadian Grand Prix of Canada in
67, 69, and from 71 to 77, the FIM Bike World Championship, World
Superbike, the Can Am, Trans-Am, the Formula Atlantic, American
LeMans Series, World Challenge, Indy Car, IMSA, the Endurance
World Championship, Formula 5000 and others.
At
the beginning of 1958, the members of the British Empire Motor
Club evaluated the possibility of creating a road circuit in Ontario.
In the same year, they found and bought a land of 450 acres in
the north of the small town of Bowmanville. As of autumn 58, the
circuit was baptized Mosport Limited. Mosport is an abbreviation
of Motor Sport.
The
design of the track, as well as the structure of the circuit,
were conceived by Mr. Alan Bunting. In 1960, the organizing committee
received the visit of Stirling Moss. This one was very entousiaste
with the track development. After some modifications in the southern
part, the series of turns was replaced by one 90 degrees under
pretext which the new configuration would be a better challenge
for the drivers and a better spectacle for the racing fans . At
this point in time the turns 5a and 5b are called "Moss Corner".
Construction
was long and difficult because of problems of zoning, taxation
and several rains abundant. Evaluated with 250,000 dollars at
the time, construction pushed the bar with nearly 500,000 dollars.
The
circuit of Mosport is one of three tracks to have had the privilege
to host races of Formula 1, Can-Am and IndyCar , the two others
being the Mont-Tremblant and Watkins Glen in the New York state.
Moreover, it's Mosport that hostthe most Can-Am races in the championship
history with 24 races.

Historique:
World Challenge, lIndy Car, lIMSA, le Championnat
l'état de New York.
